Adopt Your Next Pet

We were truly devastated at the loss of our Mastiff Billy.
It took us several weeks to realize that we wanted another dog and we talked about different breeds. Since we are getting older, we thought of getting a smaller dog as they would not put as much strain on us physically.

We looked online at puppies of all types and decided instead to adopt a young adult from our local shelter. All the ones near our house have photos posted on their websites so every few days we would go to a different shelter and look for our special dog.

We looked at mixed breeds of all sorts and were sad to see so many Pit Bulls at all the shelters. If not trained, these dogs are hard to handle and can be dominate and pull you around where you don't wish to go. Some shelter dogs were aggressive, some meek and most friendly and looking for someone to love them.

After looking for many weeks, my husband and I realized that we really wanted another Mastiff. Their temperament is normally predictable and stable. They are loyal, gentle fun loving dogs that do not need to run 5 miles a day to work off their pent up energy. Once we agreed on another Mastiff, we also decided to adopt.

We found a wonderful website called West Coast Mastiff & Large Breed Rescue. http://www.wcmastiffrescue.com/ We were really impressed that they did screen potential adopter's and were very concerned that you understood the requirements of adopting a large breed dog. It took a bit of time to find a dog that we thought would be right for our family but we fell in love we an Apricot Mastiff named Bridget.

Bridget did not know her name and lived outside most of her life so we changed her name to Babe. She does not have much training but like most Mastiffs, she wants to please us and once she understands what we want, she does comply. Our dog Foster did not like Babe at first and growled and snapped at her. Now he loves to lay against her especially laying in the sun in our backyard. It's amazing how adaptable dogs are.

The next time you are looking for a new pet, I highly recommend you adopt. There are lots of choices and most pure breed animals have a rescue organization where you can find your perfect pet.
